In our last blog, we provided some new insight into King Law Firm Attorneys at Law, Inc.’s litigation attorney, Rachel King. But no matter how dedicated and driven she is to protecting the rights of her clients, she cannot do it alone. That’s why she has built a powerful team of like-minded, female legal professionals to help her be the fiercest advocate she can be, both in and outside of the courtroom. It begins with a team of female legal professionals Rachel has had male colleagues in the past, but she prefers to surround herself with strong, professional women. There is an inherent sense of peace and understanding that occasionally gets disrupted when men have been a part of her team. She’s also found that co-ed offices tend to be less family-oriented, causing an imbalance in work-life balance that comes with an all-female team. Her team members agree — an all-female firm has a much more caring and uplifting atmosphere. There is an air of support in and out of the office that isn’t normally found in other firms and being part of an all-female firm helps get their voices heard and empowers them in ways that a co-ed or male-dominated firm sometimes will not allow. There is a lot of estrogen, though, which could potentially lead to a lot of pent-up drama exploding at any moment. Luckily, that hasn’t happened yet. The Lone Lawyer As of this writing, Rachel is the sole litigation attorney on staff, which means she is the only person who can provide legal advice, appear in front of a judge on behalf of the client, and prepare legal strategy for each case. She would love to have a partner to help relieve some of the stress that comes with litigation, however, finding someone who has the same dedication, work ethic, and loyalty to their clients as she does is like finding an obscure term in a sea of law books. If you have been on this website or you’re a client or friend of Rachel King, you know that she’s accomplished quite a bit in her young life. After serving in the Army for seven years as a paralegal and Communication Specialist, she earned her Juris Doctor degree from Thomas Jefferson School of Law and formed King Law Firm Attorneys at Law, Inc. shortly thereafter. But there are so many more layers to Rachel that you may not know about. Grew Up in a Family of Lawyers You could say Rachel was born into the law. Her father, Patrick King, is a practicing lawyer in Nevada and her cousin, Scott Russo, is a litigator in Orange County, California. As a child, she would “help” her dad with his cases, learning how to make strategic decisions within the confines of the law. Joined the Military Soon After Graduating High School Rachel spent a few months in college, but realized early on she wasn’t mentally ready for the work needed to become a lawyer. Without a job, money, or a place to live, she decided to join the military. Her decision came shortly after 9/11, so her family had mixed feelings, but the decision taught her the discipline she needed to embrace the suck in all aspects of her life. She Was Sued When She Was 21 Though the lawyer she had after being sued made her feel small, ineffective, and dumb, the experience gave her insight into how she didn’t want to practice law. She learned how to be fierce, but kind, respected, but feared, and led her to be humble, approachable, relatable, and trustworthy. It’s also why she is always upfront with her clients about concerns she may have and the emotional toll their case may have on them and their family. Has a Quarterly Mandatory Fun Day at the Firm A team is only as good as its weakest member. To keep her team in peak mental condition, Rachel plans a mandatory event each month for her staff. Whether it’s going to a spa, an escape room, a paint and sip, or a simple lunch, getting them out of the office for a day of team building helps build comradery, raises morale, and strengthens the foundation of the firm. Is an Avid Runner and Hiker For Rachel King, exercise is her opening statement, helping her start the day on the right path. Routinely running and hiking maintains her mental and physical health, clears her mind and releases the extreme amount of stress that comes with the job. Is a Literature and Writing Major and a Very Avid Reader Rachel reads every day before bed. Though her favorite genre is historical fiction, her favorite nonfiction books include Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen by Christopher McDougall and the recent New York Times Bestseller Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art by James Nestor. Earlier this year, attorney Rachel King, owner of the California-based King Law Firm Attorneys at Law, Inc., wanted to build confidant relationships with those seeking answers to their burning legal questions by expanding the dissemination of her ever-growing knowledge of legal processes beyond Facebook and other social media platforms. Thus came the idea to speak to her audience in length in a weekly podcast. To accomplish this feat, Rachel enlisted her father, Patrick O King, Esq., a Nevada-based lawyer with King and Russo, Ltd., to join her on her new venture. Patrick has been practicing law since 1982 and specializes in estate planning, business and family law, and personal injury cases. Together, the duo seeks to bridge the gap between old-school law practices and 21 st century techniques while helping the laymen navigate the sometimes confusing and stressful world of law. The ultimate goal is to succinctly cover a bevy of topics from civil litigation and criminal justice to estate planning and family law. And they are certainly on their way. Being raised in a family of attorneys, I had a clear idea of where I wanted to be in my career. I earned my Juris Doctor degree from Thomas Jefferson School of Law and served in the Army as a paralegal and Communication Specialist. Right now, my expertise is in estate planning, family law, bankruptcy, and real estate law. But, whatever your needs, I strive to provide professional representation that meets the diverse legal needs of each individual. New laws are coming in 2018. Which ones may affect you? Did you know before this year it was illegal to enter a crosswalk after the “Don’t Walk” symbol begins flashing? With over 900 bills signed into law last year, it’s nearly impossible to know what is and isn’t legal. The majority of laws going into effect this year won’t affect most of our daily lives, but there are a few everyone should know. Many sanctuary state laws will be taking effect. Police may no longer ask a person’s immigration status. Immigration officials must present a warrant to access employee records. Universities and businesses are prohibited from cooperating with federal immigration officials. Landlords may not report illegal renters. State agencies and officials who work with children do not have to report immigration violations. Recreational marijuana is legal. What you may not know is: It’s illegal to smoke or have any open containers of marijuana while driving, or to drive while under the influence of marijuana. You must have a state-issued license to sell recreational marijuana. Business owners will see some major changes. Minimum wage rises to $10.50 or $11 based on the number of employees. Employers must offer up to 12 weeks of unpaid maternity leave. Employers may not ask an applicant about their salary history or perform a background check until after an official employment offer has been presented. Sexual harassment training must include gender identity and sexual orientation harassment. Schools and Universities will change in varying ways. Children may no longer be denied meals if their parents fail to pay their fees. Free tampons must be provided to junior and senior high students attending schools where poverty-level students make up at least 40% of the class. The high school exit exam has been eliminated. Per-unit fees will be waived for first-year students attending community college. LGBT laws continue to expand. A “non-binary” status option will be available for all state documentation. It will be illegal for long-term care facilities to discriminate based on gender identity or sexual orientation, or repeatedly fail to use a resident’s preferred name or pronoun. Gun regulations ramp up. All ammunition must be bought or transported across state lines through a licensed dealer. Gun owners convicted of a felony must turn over all firearms. Anyone convicted of a hate crime will be unable to purchase firearms for 10 years. A serial number must be purchased from the state for every home-made weapon. A few safety and environmental measures will also take effect. Incandescent lightbulbs will no longer be shelved. Public venues undergoing heavy renovations will be required to include a baby changing table in men’s bathrooms. Drivers with certified medical conditions may tint their windows. And finally, some local and state issues. Neighborhood polling places will be closed in favor of mail-only elections. Vehicle registration will rise between $25 and $175 depending on the value of the vehicle. Pharmaceutical companies must give advance notice before any large rise in costs.
